St. Basil's parish celebrated it’s 100th Anniversary in 2001. The parish was formed from a group of people from the Sub Carpatho-Russian province of Galicia who had settled in the Maplewood area, Town of Colonie near Albany, NY. The church was established by 19 men, inspired by Father (now Saint) Alexander Hotovitsky, who helped organize parishes all along the east coast. In January 1901, the Brotherhood of St. Basil the Great was formed and His Grace, Bishop Tikhon of the Aleutians and North America blessed the members of the Brotherhood to construct a church building.

The cornerstone was laid and blessed by Father Alexander Hotovitsky on November 21, 1901. Father Alexander traveled from New York City to conduct liturgical services for the people of St. Basil's.

The congregation continued to grow and a new, larger church became necessary and was blessed by Metropolitan Theophilus in September 1945.  Many of the parishioners lived in the Maplewood area surrounding the church.

This church building remains to this day and has been the site of countless Sacraments and Blessings to the many generations of St. Basil's parish.  An excellent choir under the directorship of Michael Mellin sings for all services.

UKRAINIAN GOVT BARS MONKS OF U.O.C. FROM KIEV CAVES LAVR

A state commission to “inspect” the incorrupt relics of the Kiev Caves Lavra arrived at the monastery this morning.

The group, consisting of employees of the Ministry of Culture, the state-operated Kiev Caves Museum-Preserve, and various specialists, took an angle grinder to the locks on the buildings leading to the Near and Far Caves, reports Orthodox Life.

They replaced the locks on the buildings, thus barring the monks of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church who rebuilt and cared for the monastery over the past 30 years.

The commission was created by order of the Ministry of Culture on March 5, tasked with checking the “presence of the remains of saints in the tombs of the Near and Far Caves of the Kiev Caves Lavra National Preserve,” and “determining the historical and scientific value of the remains of the saints.” Items identified as “cultural values” are to be catalogued.

According to the Union of Orthodox Journalists, they even plan to take samples for DNA testing.

The Caves are home to the incorrupt relics of more than 120 saints.

According to the monastery’s lawyer, Archpriest Nikita Chekman, the Orthodox monks refused to participate in the work of the commission, considering it a blasphemy to “inspect” the relics as “cultural values.”

“After reviewing the [Ministry of Culture’s] order itself and communicating with commission members during the negotiation process, the monastery brotherhood unanimously and with the blessing of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine decided not to participate in the work of this commission,” Fr. Nikita explained.

He continued:

Why? Because the commission includes a number of scientists, doctors, including anatomists, histologists, embryologists, and in particular, a doctor of veterinary sciences, a member of the Pirogov Commission for re-embalming bodies, etc. That is, the essence of the inspection is to conduct some unclear research on God’s holy saints whose holy incorruptible relics are located in the Caves of the Kiev Caves Lavra.

For almost 1,000 years, the monks of the Holy Dormition-Kiev Caves Lavra have been taking care of the holy relics, celebrating Divine services, and the faithful have been reverently venerating the relics of God’s holy saints. During the Soviet era, the Church was removed from the custody of the holy relics, but at the end of the last century, historical justice was restored—the holy relics of God’s saints were returned to the Church, and the Church has since been fulfilling its obedience and duty [to preserve the remains of the saints].

But we see that currently some incomprehensible things are happening, so the monks have decided that it’s impossible to participate in these blasphemous actions.

Furthermore, according to Fr. Nikita, considering that several court cases are still underway concerning the use of the territories of the Upper and Lower Lavra, the Ministry of Culture’s actions are actually illegal.

“Therefore, the Lavra brotherhood made the appropriate decision,” he said, noting that further appeals will be brought to the courts.

Representatives of the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” and the Ukrainian state continue to show disdain for the holy churches of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

There have been several scandals concerning the desecration of churches of the Holy Dormition-Kiev Caves Lavra ever since the state evicted the Orthodox Church from the Upper Lavra, including the monastery’s main cathedrals, at the end of 2022. The Lavra became a state-owned cultural object under the godless authorities of the Soviet Union, and the Ukrainian government continues this practice.

Dozens, if not hundreds, of churches across the country have also become scenes of violence, as OCU representatives have physically seized churches, often attacking Orthodox Christians, including clergy and hierarchs. Criminologists even believe that schismatic-nationalistic raiders attempted to murderHis Eminence Metropolitan Theodosy of Cherkasy in the seizure of the Archangel Michael Cathedral in October.

More recently, a video that began circulating over the weekend shows an OCU “priest,” in a word to his congregation, blaspheming against holy houses of God.

“UOC [the canonical Church—Ed.] churches are only meant to be public toilets, since they’re enemies of our state,” the schismatic cleric declares.

The Kiev Caves Lavra’s Holy Dormition Cathedral has been desecrated by the “services” of the schismatic OCU, and the Refectory Church of Sts. Anthony and Theodosius has been abused a number of times. In January 2023, just weeks after the UOC was expelled from the Upper Lavra, a concert was held featuring songs about killing Russians and destroying Moscow, which “Jesus blesses,” according to the group Chorea Kozatska.

The church has also been used to host arts and crafts shows, and in early December, an ecumenical military prayer breakfast was held, with representatives of various Christian, Muslim, and Jewish groups.

On Friday, December 13, the Ukrainian channel 1+1 aired a cooking show that was taped in the refectory church building on November 29, featuring chef and restaurateur Evgeny Klopotenko, reports the Union of Orthodox Journalists.

The show caused outrage in Ukrainian society, among representatives of various religious. “In the Refectory Church of the Kiev Caves Lavra, there’s everything except worship now,” the Rivne Dioceseof the canonical UOC wrote on Facebook.

“A church is a place consecrated for prayer, repentance, and spiritual growth, not a space for gastronomic experiments or entertainment events,” the diocese continued.

The local Roman Catholic bishop condemned the program as a manifestation of the “hydra” of communism “reviving its tentacles today” and called on the state to investigate the matter.

The schismatic OCU doesn’t know what to do with such churches that have been “liberated” from Russian control, as the Ukrainian state speaks of it, said political analyst Alexei Kusch.

“You can shout about ‘returning shrines’ till you’re blue in the face, but if the OCU is tolerant of such incidents, when they organize such shows in a church, it simply confirms its status as a state church that sacralizes the nation and secularizes faith, replacing God with the nation, and substituting spirituality with secular ideology,” Kusch added.

Given the scandal created by the cooking show, Chef Klopotenko offered his “sincere apologies,” while also accusing the canonical UOC of separating the people from God and Russian propagandists of creating a fake scandal.

Likewise, Maxim Ostapenko, director of the state’s Kiev Caves Lavra Museum-Preserve, pinned the scandal not on those who filmed the show, but on “pro-Russian forces.” Noting that the show was filmed in the refectory part of the church building, he called on everyone to “be attentive to provocations that are often spread by the enemy.”

ZELENSKY CANCELS MET. ONUPHRY'S CITIZENSHIP

President Zelensky of Ukraine has deprived His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine of Ukrainian citizenship.

Met. Onuphry is the primate of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the largest religious confession in the country.

The Ukrainian Security Service claims that Met. Onuphry voluntarily received Russian citizenship in 2002 but didn’t inform Ukrainian authorities about it. He thus continued to enjoy the status and rights of a Ukrainian citizen.

The SBU also claims that His Beatitude maintains contact with the Moscow Patriarchate and “deliberately opposed the acquisition of canonical independence of the Ukrainian Church from the Moscow Patriarchate, whose representative openly support Russian aggression against Ukraine. Despite the full-scale invasion, Berezovsky (Onuphry) actually continues to support the policy of the Russian Orthodox Church and its leadership, in particular Patriarch Kirill (Gundyaev).”

Of course, the SBU statement provides no evidence of its claims, which are blatantly contradicted by the reality on the ground. Met. Onuphry has explicitly condemned the war many times over, and it’s well known that he led the UOC, at its Local Council in May 2022, to separate from the Moscow Patriarchate.

His Eminence Metropolitan Kliment of Nizhyn, Chairman of the UOC’s Synodal Information and Educational Department, clarified in comments to BBC Ukraine that “His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry explained that he only has the passport of a citizen of Ukraine. Besides Ukrainian, he doesn’t have any other passports, including of the Russian Federation. He has already explained that he has never applied to the state bodies of other states to acquire another citizenship.”

Met. Onuphry, who is a native Bukovinian, explained in April 2023 that when the Soviet Union fell, his automatically received Russian citizenship because he had a permanent registration there, having been a long-time resident of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. At the same time, he intentionally received Ukrainian citizenship and never used his Russian citizenship, and when relations between the Russia and Ukraine began to deteriorate, he allowed his Russian passport to lapse.

In his evening address, Zelensky referred to Met. Onuphry’s situation though without naming him. He declared that Ukraine is fighting for its spiritual independence and that such people “do not and will not have a place in Ukraine.”

“They’ve taken away his passport,” commented His Eminence Metropolitan Luke of Zaporozhye on his Telegram channel, “but Christ can’t be taken away.”

He concluded his reflection:

For us, today’s blow is a moment of purification and unity, not defeat. This is a call to take faith deeper than nationality or formal status. After all, the Church is the Body of Christ, where love remains the main connecting thread, and citizenship is only a temporary affiliation. In addition to temporary earthly citizenship, we have eternal citizenship—Heavenly, and we don’t need a passport there.

Yes, the deprivation of citizenship is a blatant injustice, but it doesn’t deprive us of the faith and spiritual authority of the UOC pastors. On the contrary, it’s a time to become stronger in prayer, mercy and unity. From a spiritual point of view, we must steadfastly bear the cross with the Church and continue our ministry, as required by Christ.

US CONGRESSWOMAN CONDEMNS PERSECUTION OF U.O.C.

Representative Anna Paulina Luna is the latest American politician to raise awareness about the Ukrainian state’s persecution of Orthodox Christians.

Last year, the Parliament and President introduced legislation that lays the foundation to ban the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Under this law, the authorities recently launched an investigation into the Kiev Metropolis of the UOC, determined to prove that it’s still connected to the Moscow Patriarchate. Most recently, Zelensky canceled the citizenship of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry of Kiev and All Ukraine on baseless accusations.

Against this background, Luna, a Republican Congresswoman from Florida, stated yesterday that Zelensky banned the Orthodox Church, and thus she will fight to stop the flow of weapons and money to Ukraine:

Predictably, Luna’s statement drew accusations that her stance for religious freedom is actually a Kremlin narrative, to which she replied:

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna’s biography from her website:

Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna is currently serving her second term as the Representative for Florida’s Thirteenth Congressional District. She serves on the Oversight and Government Reform committee along with the Foreign Affairs committee. She is also the Chairwoman of the Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets.

Rep. Luna is the first Mexican-American woman elected to the United States Congress to represent Florida. Raised by a single mother in Southern California, Anna’s tough upbringing taught her the importance of hard work and grit.

Anna joined the military as a young adult. She would go on to graduate from the University of West Florida with a Bachelor’s Degree in biology. While serving in the United States Air Force, Anna met her husband, Andy—who earned a bronze star and purple heart while fighting against terrorists in Afghanistan.

Anna believes that the Washington swamp’s “business as usual” attitude has ruined the lives of everyday Americans, who have been failed by decades of leadership that didn’t value them for anything more than their votes. In Congress, Anna is committed to always fighting against the elitist political establishment that has, for far too long, ignored the interests and needs of the American people.

In 2023, she was named as one of Time’s next 100 most influential people in the world.

Congresswoman Luna resides in St. Petersburg, with her husband Andy.

ATTACK ON ST. ELIAS CHURCH OF DWEILLAA DAMASCUS

SUNDAY, JUNE 22, 2025

Statement from the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East

Note: His Eminence Metropolitan Saba, the seminarians and other pilgrims in Lebanon are a great distance from this violence, praying for the souls impacted by this attack.

Statement Issued by the Patriarchate of Antioch
Damascus, June 22, 2025

On this day when our Antiochian Church commemorates All the Saints of Antioch, the treacherous hand of evil struck this evening, claiming our lives, along with the lives of our loved ones who fell today as martyrs during the evening Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Prophet Elias in Dweilaa, Damascus.

According to the initial information available at this time, an explosion occurred at the entrance of the church, resulting in the deaths of numerous martyrs and causing injuries to many others who were inside the church or in its immediate vicinity.

As we are currently counting the martyrs and the wounded, and gathering the remains and bodies of our martyrs, whose exact number we have not yet been able to determine, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East strongly condemns this heinous act and denounces, in the strongest terms, this horrific crime. It calls upon the responsible authorities to assume full responsibility for what has happened and continues to happen in terms of violation against the sanctity of churches, and to ensure the protection of all citizens.

His Beatitude Patriarch John X has been personally following the developments from the very first moment. He is conducting both local and regional communications to convey the grim reality unfolding in Damascus to the entire world. He is calling for urgent action to put an end to these massacres.

We offer our prayers for the repose of the souls of the martyrs, for the healing of the wounded, and for the consolation of our grieving faithful. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to our faith and, through that steadfastness, our rejection of all fear and intimidation. We beseech Christ our God to guide the ship of our salvation through the storms of this world, He who is blessed forever.
